Hurricane Helene moved inland with a catastrophic impact on the mountains and the Upstate leaving most of the Carolinas without power or communication. Because the infrastructure was severed there was very little immediate media coverage on the damage as there was no way to spread the news that the disaster had even occurred. Once the initial crisis was managed we were hired by Rock Communications to document their vital role in the emergency response efforts and the restoration of connectivity.
What began as a standard assignment quickly evolved into a large scale production as I collected interviews and evidence of recovery from counties across South Carolina. My objective was to translate the technical necessity of communication infrastructure into a human story of resilience. By condensing seventeen detailed interviews into a high impact highlight film I focused on the shared narrative of the first responders and technicians on the ground. I compiled original B-roll from the interview sites and sourced archival imagery from across the state to build a compelling visual record of a community coming together during a season of immense challenge.
